“Mounajat Concert” – The Voice of Tarab [Tunisia]
Imbued by a childhood basked in the chanting of poetry in Tunis' Medina, the scintillating Lotfi Bouchnak revives the golden era of Arabic song through Muwashshah, qasidas, dawr, and Iraki maqams.
Singer, oud player and composer, Lutfi Bushnaq is among the few artists within the huge Arab list to endorse the Egyptian traditional song, (remember his interpretation of Al Ward Gamil "Flowers are beautiful"), along with the inflections of Algerian Rai while preserving the sacred tradition, in respect of the heritage of Ancestors. He knows how to spark the real tarab, poetic and musical emotions, mobilizing a wide spectrum of feelings; from the most delicate to the most violent. His immense fame, however, was in the field of Tunisian Malouf (literally "use") which unites, in the essence of Nuba, the secular and religious repertory associated with Sufi brotherhoods.
Taking the Arab-Andalusian style beyond the Mediterranean, instilling his views, Lutfi Bushnaq contributed to his institutional reign; a reign that doesn’t contradict with the living palette of his richness poetic, nor with the infinite diversity of his territory.
Thanks to him, Malouf discovered his full deployment, between academic research and the revitalization’s activity rigorously conducted by Rashidiyya, the national group supported in the early hours of Tunisia independent that inspired the artist in his youth, and his vernacular practice, as it is still expressed in cafes and in the outskirts of Zawiya.
