A Brighter Summer Day (1991)
Director: Edward Yang| Taiwan| 240 min | +15
Film Language:Taiwanese, with English subtitles

A.M. Qattan Foundation invites you to attend the Screening of "A Brighter Summer Day (1991)" at the Foundation's Cultural Centre- Al-Tira, Ramallah at 15.00.

Perhaps one of the best coming-of-age films ever produced, A Brighter Summer Day is a complex paean to youth and a country roiling with political upheaval (the title is a reference to the famed ballad sung by Elvis Presley, “Are You Lonesome Tonight”). Based on the true story of a crime that rocked Taiwan in the 1960s, two rival gangs meet a violent end as the young boy at the centre of their increasingly intractable conflict experiences the flush of first love and betrayal. A sprawling work of art from filmmaker Edward Yang, A Brighter Summer Day is novelistic in scope while somehow also maintaining an unbearable sense of intimacy, tracing the tragic fall from grace its central character experiences as he gradually moves to a life of juvenile delinquency and set against the backdrop of rock and roll’s encroaching pop culture dominance and socio-cultural turmoil.
