“This workshop is divided into two parts: Part I: Video as Evidence and Filming with your Mobile Phone (90 min session) Facilitator/ Lead: Raja Althaibani This session will cover key aspects of digital video and provide a basic technical look into how video works. It also discusses basic filmmaking tips that every video activist should know. It also introduces a method for documenting a human rights incident scene, providing step by step instruction on how to collect evidence and provide essential information to accompany your video. Finally, you’ll put theory into practice with a filming exercise. Additional note: Participants should be prepared to film with their mobile phones. Please make sure your mobile phone is charged and that there is enough memory space to capture video during our session’s exercises. PART II: Understanding and defending your media from content moderation (90 min session) Facilitator/ Lead: Dia Kayyali This session will review the challenges faced by groups using social media for advocacy, or to maintain collections of human rights related content. We will talk about recent case studies with YouTube and videos from Syria. We will briefly cover tips for people making their own videos, but we will focus on, as uploading/ sharing third party content on social media. We will talk about adding essential information, verification, and accuracy and transparency. We will briefly touch on the challenges faced by groups using social media to post human rights related content. We will talk about the experiences WITNESS partners have had with content takedowns, and share tips around adding essential information, verification, and accuracy and transparency.”
