Symposium and Discussion
«Planning Maps: Control and Liberation in a Colonial Context»

Thursday, December 14th | 13:00
Location: the Palestinian Museum, Birzeit
Speakers: Amany Khalifa, Mapping and Data Collection Coordinator at Grassroots Jerusalem.
Yara Sa’di, Researcher and PhD Candidate in Geography and Planning.

In light of Israeli policies seeking to control the sources of information, and the systematic erasure and banishment of Palestinian discourse in defining geography and public space, there is an urgent need to counter the colonial discourse and promote the Palestinian narrative of place. For years, there has been a dire lack of updated Palestinian maps and plans of Jerusalem and Palestine in general. Amany Khalifa and Yara Sa’di will present ways of engaging with geography in a colonial context, particularly in terms of the difficulties posed by the use of maps and plans as means of control and to impose the colonial discourse. They will also discuss Palestinian initiatives countering this reality.
